We look forward to saying “Welcome!”
You will be matched with a friendly and enthusiastic volunteer who will show you the city from an insider’s perspective. Greeters are not professional tour guides. They are New Yorkers giving you their time!
We’re proud to provide this free service. We want you to have a great time in the Big Apple and with one of our volunteer Greeters. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your Big Apple Greeter experience.
Visits start between 9 AM and 3 PM and are 2 to 4 hours long.
Filling out the Visitor Registration form works best on a laptop or desktop computer. Try not to use a mobile phone. No emojis anywhere on the form, please.
Visitors need confirmed accommodations in New York City-area for at least 2 nights. This will allow 1 full day between your arrival and departure days to meet a Greeter. Sorry, we cannot meet visitors who have a long airport layover or arrive on day trips from distant cities.
We recommend you request a Greet for your first full day in the city with the next two days as back-up dates. Your Greeter will provide information to help you enjoy the rest of your visit in NYC—everything from how to use public transit, to the best places to eat and shop, to locals’ favorite hidden treasures.
Don’t make plans that can’t be changed on your requested dates until your Greeter and Greet time are confirmed. The Greeters are making time in their schedule and donating it to give you a wonderful NYC experience. We will let you know as soon as possible if no Greeter is available, about 7 days before your visit.
We often fill up 4 to 6 weeks in advance. If you cannot submit the Greeter Request Form, that means we are fully booked.
Each Greeter will meet with up to 6 people, including children, who are traveling together. We cannot split larger groups and assign extra Greeters. At least 1 person in the group must be 18 years old or older.
We can assign one Greeter for one Greet during your visit to New York. Please do not submit multiple Greet requests for the same visit.
If you say that English is acceptable, you may be assigned a Greeter who does not speak your first language.
Greeters do not accept tips and are responsible for their own expenses (lunch, transportation).
Big Apple Greeter depends on donations to continue providing this service. Donations are voluntary, but greatly appreciated. Please consider making a donation. Thank you!
