The Romantic Side of New York

Ah, romance. The lights of Paris! The canals of Venice! A moonlit beach in the Maldives!

The New York City Marriage Bureau?

For Karlie Wilson and Paul Wordsworth, Manhattan’s Office of the City Clerk was the perfect place to celebrate 18 years as a couple with a late June wedding.

Karlie and Paul, who live in Sheffield in South Yorkshire, UK, flew from Manchester to JFK Airport on Sunday, got their marriage license on Monday, and met Greeter Don Kirsch on Tuesday morning outside the City Clerk’s office.

Why get married in NYC? Karlie had been to New York several times and loved it. It was Paul’s first visit, but the chance to have the “no fuss” wedding they were looking for, and to enjoy their first vacation outside the UK in 16 years, made it an easy choice.

Karlie found Big Apple Greeter online, and Don jumped at the idea of having a Greeter be the witness at their ceremony. Don and his wife Deana, who also attended the wedding, marked their 50th anniversary a few days after Paul and Karlie were married, making the event particularly meaningful for them. The two couples celebrated with a post-ceremony visit to the Upper West Side, including a walk around Lincoln Center and lunch at a classic NYC diner, Café 82 on Broadway at 82nd Street.

Paul and Karlie headed home the weekend after the wedding with a big surprise for their families, who only knew that they were taking a trip to New York, and with gratitude to Big Apple Greeter for the organization’s role in making their dream of a New York wedding come true.
