Founded in 1992, Big Apple Greeter was the world's first free “Welcome Visitor” program.

We promote a friendly, inviting, manageable image of New York City. Volunteer Greeters welcome visitors from all over the world, and visitors go home with a better appreciation of the diversity of New Yorkers and all Americans.

We create opportunities for New Yorkers to show pride in their neighborhoods and favorite places and give back to their city through volunteering.

Greeters also build bridges between people and cultures, and promote cross-cultural understanding.

Since 1992, our free service has promoted New York City worldwide and helped more than 165,000 visitors discover the City’s ethnically and culturally diverse neighborhoods in all five boroughs, all through the eyes of those who know it best—New Yorkers.
